Case Studies

Mr Azzopardi offers a personalised approach to all aspects of aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. Before undertaking a procedure it is important that you have enough information, to make sure you are able to consider the risks, benefits, implications for the options available, and whether available techniques can meet your requirements. One way in which you can make a considered choice is through reflection on a portfolio of before/after photos. The below portfolio includes typical results achieved in a variety of scenarios. It is important to realise that every person is different and the results which may be acheivable on you may differ for a variety of reasons including the quality and skin type you have, as well as the attention you are prepared to pay to the post procedure regime. It is important to also look at scientific publication sites to make sure your surgeon is both well-published and well-read.

Melasma Palpebrarum

Melasma is a common skin condition that often presents as a, blotchy, brownish pigmentation on both sides of the face. It was also known as the ‘mask of pregnancy’. Melasma is more common in women than in men, with an onset typically in early 20s to 40's. Melasma is commonest in people who tan easily or have naturally brown skin (Fitzpatrick skin phototypes III, IV V). Melasma is difficult to treat, and its management involves a process of treatment including laser, and prescription creams, at times medications, but sucess is often longlasting.

Keloid Scarring

Wound healing can be abnormal. Some scars will become heaped but will not extend beyond the original scar. Some on the other hand, will invade normal skin and may never stop growing. They may be itchy, painful and may interfere with function around mobile body parts such as the fingers, and elbows. Others may interfer with the function of noble organs such as eyes, nose, mouth or ears.

In Mr Azzopardi's hands, keloid treatment is evdience based. He is an internationally recognised author on the subject written and lectured at scientific conferences. Treatment often consists of a combined approach along international guidelines and may include injections, lasers, and at times freezing therapy.

Treatment of keloids is a process which will be rarely complete in one sitting. However using this approach, remission is often sustained and long term

 Acne Scarring

Active acne often happens in adolescence, but can sometimes also start in later years. It commonly affects the face, but in more severe cases also the chest (so called medallion area), the back and shoulders and arms. Once active acne subsides it often leaves many scars.

Often these scars are sunken, sometimes they are raised. There are different types of acne and each has to be addressed separately. Issues which need treatment include the shape of the scar, the way it feels and its colour.

Treatment may involve just one session, but often will take multiple sessions. For each patient it is important to apply the correct laser for the correct type of scar.

Burn scars

Burn scars are often debilitiating and affect function as well as appearance. Use of laser comes in after the primary burn treatment. Lifesaving treatment in the form of skinn grafts and other reconstructive technique, may be complicated by abnormal scarring.

Such scarring often comes in the shape of lines or sheets. These may result in loss of function, movement, pain, and a feeling of tighness. Using a combination of specialist techniques, function and appearance may be improved without recourse to traditional surgery.

Facelift

Facelift is a technique used for facial rejuvenation and traditionally performed by surgical means to remove excess skin and provide reconstruction of supporting structures. The advent of advanced laser techniques means that on many occasions traditional surgey is replaced with laser techniques to provide both skin rejuvenation and, using cutting edge innovation, regeneration of underlying supporting ligaments, as an awake procedure with minimum downtime.

As a consultant plastic surgeon Mr Azzopardi will choose the technique which best fits your requirement, whether open, mini or fully laser.

As a laser superspecialist, Mr Azzopardi is highly skilled in multiple laser techniques, and can discuss the best one suited to your clinical requirement, availability and downtime

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty may be needed in a number of circumstances, including wieghtloss, after pregnancy, bariatric surgery. As you change to an increasingly healthy lifestyle, and shed weight, your skin may not adapt as readily, resulting in lose, redundant skin which can cause both functional issues an aesthetic distress. You may also have pockets of stubborn fat which are resistant to treatment.  It is often possible to use highly specialised laser techniques to tighten skin, remove pockets of stubborn fat, and sculpt your appearance. This is an awake procedure with minimum downtime.

Stretch Marks

Over 40% of ladies will have stretchmarks at some point in their life. Stretchmarks are atrophic scars, meaning that the dermis (the second layer of skin) is torn, and thinner. They are classifed as scars or linae albae.

Stretchmarks are an annoying nuisance and cause significant concern. Traditionally, stretchmarks were thought of as impossible to treat. Using the latest cutting edge technique,s and combined approaches,  it is possible to improve significantly their appearance. Although treatment is rarely a one-off, there is very little downtime involved.

Finger Reconstruction

Results with wound healing. Our trailblazing techniques focus on skin regeneration. This wound presented after undergoing substantial surgery to the index finger to remove a nasty growth on the finger nail and needed an extensive cut to be able to flip skin over and cover the defect. Laser was used to restore and regenerate the skin to its healthy supple strong and mobile former self.
